 Older Adult Ministries

An active group that combines the people and resources of several United Methodist churches is the Older Adult Outing Group. Excursions to nearby places of interest combined with good fellowship make this an important social and informational gathering.
On the fourth Tuesday of each month, Emory, Meadowview, Byars Cobbs, and Lebanon churches explore the surrounding area to learn the history, visit the cultural sites, and enjoy each other's company, Recent trips have included the Hillsville Court House, Gatlinburg, the Gray Fossil Site near Johnson City, Virginia Tech, and Wayne Henderson's music making shop near Galax, Virginia.

Travel is by activity bus. Costs include lunch and entrance fees.Participation is open to all. For more information,, contact pastor David Jackson at 944-6841.

 Half Century Club

The Half Century Club is a group of Seniors who meet for lunch at various locations on the second Wednesday of each month. EUMC founded the Half Century Club in 1983 and it has developed over the years into a community wide program. Regular attendees include not only those associated with EUMC but also other residents of the area. The Group's one rule is that there is no formal program at these meetings, however, there is a short period for announcements, comments and hopefully interesting stories that people wish to share. The Group's lone matter of business is the selection of the location for the next meeting.

Although meetings are usually held at various restaurants and venues in Washington County and upper East Tennessee, the Group has ventured as far as Chateau Morrisette on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Va and as close as a back yard in Emory. Recent stops include The Black Rooster in Marion, The Pepper Mill in Abingdon, The Chop House in Kingsport, and Shatley Springs in Crumpler, NC

The Half Century Club has no official membership roll, but if you want to get your name on the contact list call Evon Crowder (276-944-5967), Neel Rich (276-944-3351) or the Church Office (276-944-6841).

 Bulletin Delivery & Radio Ministry

Each Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. WEHC (our local college radio station) broadcasts the Emory UMC worship service from the previous week; the broadcast area covers much of Southwest Virginia.  As a supplement to this ministry, volunteers from the church deliver a bulletin each week to our local home bound members so that they can listen from home and retain a sense of connection to the congregation.

 Gathering around the Table

On the second and fourth Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m., come share a meal and fellowship including a discussion of a topic of interest.  A children's time is included.

 Covenant Bible Study

Each Sunday during the school year Emory UMC joins with its partner congregation, Meadowview UMC, for a weekly bible study.  The study runs from 4 to 5:15 p.m. each Sunday afternoon and is held at Emory UMC in the Dow Room in the Fellowship Hall.  The study is an ongoing reading of scripture that includes a wide-ranging discussion; questions and observations are always welcome.

 SPARQ Study Group

SQARQ (Seeking People Asking Relevant Questions) is a friendly group of folks that meet weekly to discuss topics of interest and search scripture to find answers or even more questions.  Topics have included: Love, Forgiveness, Hope, Age of Accountability, the Holy Spirit, and many more.  All are welcome to attend to find fellowship and lively, biblical discussion.  Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the home of Neel Rich.
